LASIK

Laser In Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) is the single most popular refractive procedure today for correcting refractive errors. In LASIK, the doctor uses a laser beam to reshape tissue beneath a flap created on the surface of the cornea. After the laser energy has been applied, the flap is returned to its original position. Visual recovery is rapid and there is minimal discomfort. The vast majority of patients return to their normal activities the next day after surgery.

A thin flap is created on the surface of the cornea.

Laser energy reshapes the cornea.

Lasik eye surgery remains the most popular laser vision correction procedure in the world. Its popularity can be credited to the level of success, safety, predictability, and rapid healing associated with the procedure. Millions of people now live without the need for glasses or contact lenses thanks to Lasik eye surgery. Patients over 40 who need reading glasses can also be treated with Monovision or NearVision CK®. Visit the informational NearVision CK® page to learn about our ability to correct presbyopia without lasers!

Custom LASIK

Custom LASIK allows the doctor to tailor the LASIK procedure to each individual eye and potentially improve upon the already excellent results available from the conventional procedure. This next generation technique uses wavefront technology to measure the entire eye and create a "three-dimensional" map. The map contains detailed optical information that is unique to each eye, much like a fingerprint is unique to each individual. The doctor uses this information to guide the laser in customizing the treatment to the eye's particular visual irregularities. While conventional LASIK corrects refractive errors known as lower-order aberrations (myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism) that affect how much we can see, Custom LASIK also has the potential to improve higher-order aberrations (coma, spherical aberration, and others) that affect how well we can see. Studies indicate that 5 to 10 percent of patients significantly benefit from Custom LASIK treatments while other patients may benefit to a lesser degree.

Key features of Custom LASIK

  • treats both lower- and higher-order aberrations
  • ability to offer LASIK treatment to people with larger pupils
  • reduced chance of night-vision disturbances, glare and halos for people at risk for higher-order aberrations
  • potential for treating patients with sub-optimal outcomes from previous refractive procedures
